  3. The arithmetic of expected loss
  4. Set a stop before you sit down

A high roller is a player who bets large stakes, and the term usually points at a table with a high minimum bet. Nothing about the game itself changes when the stake does: the same cards fall and the same wheel spins. What changes is the size of every bet, and with it the size of the loss the house edge is expected to take.

What a high roller is, and what changes

The label describes the stake, not the player’s skill or luck. A Pagat page on baccarat, saved in this site’s evidence folder, says the game has a reputation for attracting high rollers, yet it is also clear that neither the players nor the house have any choice in how the cards play out. The only decisions are how much to bet and on which side.

At a higher-limit table three things move and three stay put.

  1. Changes: the minimum and maximum bet, often the number of seats, and the attention a single round deserves.
  2. Stays: the rules of the round, including how the cards or dice settle it.
  3. Stays: the paytable for each bet, and so the house edge, unless the table says otherwise on its own rules screen.

Read the limits the table displays before you sit, and open its rules screen. This site states no LARO77 limit, because limits belong to each table.

VIP table: a seat, not an edge

A VIP table is a way of arranging limits and seating, nothing more. It does not tilt the odds toward you, and the house edge on a given bet is the same as at an ordinary table of that game if the rules match. The house edge meaning explained says the edge is built into the odds of every outcome, so it applies to every round whatever the stake.

Compare two examples. A Banker bet in eight-deck baccarat carries a commonly published house edge of 1.06%, and a Player bet 1.24%, from the saved Wizard of Odds baccarat basics text (baccarat-house-edge-2026-10-01). A Dragon or Tiger bet, where a tie loses half, carries 3.73% in the saved Wizard of Odds Dragon Tiger page. Those percentages apply at ₱200 a round and at ₱2,000 a round alike.

The arithmetic of expected loss

Expected loss = stake × rounds × house edge. Both of the examples below are labelled as examples with round numbers picked for the example, not as anything a LARO77 table will pay.

ExampleStakeRoundsTurnoverHouse edgeExpected loss
Baccarat Player bet, lower stake₱200100₱20,0001.24%₱248
Baccarat Player bet, higher stake₱2,000100₱200,0001.24%₱2,480
Dragon or Tiger bet, lower stake₱200100₱20,0003.73%₱746
Dragon or Tiger bet, higher stake₱2,000100₱200,0003.73%₱7,460

Multiplying the stake by ten multiplies the expected loss by ten. Because a round at a ₱2,000 stake can swing by that amount in either direction, a short session can end well above or well below the average, yet the average does not move.

Turnover is the number that matters, not the deposit. A ₱20,000 deposit recycled through winning rounds can produce far more turnover than ₱20,000, and expected loss follows the turnover.

Set a stop before you sit down

The numbers only help if you fix them first. Decide the most you will lose, in pesos, before the first round, and treat that amount as the price of the session.

  1. Pick a stop in pesos you can lose without touching rent, bills or borrowed money.
  2. Divide it by your stake to see how many rounds it covers: ₱2,000 at a ₱200 stake is 10 rounds.
  3. Compare that with the expected loss for the rounds you want to play.
  4. Leave at the stop. Do not raise the stake to win it back, because that raises the expected loss.

If that last rule is hard to follow, or play has started to feel like a need rather than a choice, read help for a problem gambler and reach out to the support it lists.

A higher stake does not change the card values either. The picture cards and their values are the same at every limit, and the probability arithmetic for a card side bet is the same too: see the Dragon Tiger suited tie bet for a worked example. FAQ

What is a high roller in a casino?

A high roller is a player who stakes large amounts per bet, usually at a table with a high minimum. The word describes the size of the stakes, not a different game or a better set of odds.

Does a VIP table have better odds?

No. A VIP table is a seating and limits arrangement. The deck, the wheel or the dice are the same and the house edge is whatever the game's rules set, so a bigger stake only multiplies the expected loss.

How do I work out my expected loss?

Multiply stake × rounds × house edge. At a ₱200 stake over 100 rounds on a 1.24% edge, the expected loss is ₱200 × 100 × 0.0124 = ₱248. That figure is an average over many sessions, so any one session can land far from it.

Where do I find a table's limits?

Open the table and read the minimum and maximum bet it displays before you sit. Limits are set per table, and this site does not state any LARO77 limit.
